Dr Paul Englert is a Singapore-based I/O psychologist and academic. In 1997, he founded OPRA Psychology Group in New Zealand, a company that worked with businesses to help recruit, develop and retain high-performing staff through customised HR solutions, coaching, and psychology, applied to work to develop employee and organisational potential. Paul grew OPRA to 12 offices in 3 countries and the company was considered the premium I/O psychology business in the Asia Pacific region. OPRA was sold to Assessment and Talent Management solutions company PSI in 2021.

Born and educated in New Zealand, Paul has over two decades of experience in the field of I/O psychology. He worked with Psytech on International Business Development from 2008 – 2010, coordinating the company’s worldwide distribution network encompassing partners in 25 countries from the United Kingdom.

In 2010, Paul was headhunted and selected for the role of Chief Executive Officer of Recruit Advantage by major shareholder News Ltd. Paul’s role was to turnaround the company and orchestrate a partial share sale allowing News Ltd. to realise their investment. In his first full financial year as CEO, Paul delivered a maiden profit to News Ltd. from Recruit Advantage’s history of losses. A management buy-out was structured and successfully completed in 2012.

Paul received a Doctorate in Philosophy from Victoria University of Wellington in 2002, focusing his thesis on unemployment. Through the years he has undertaken lectureships on I/O psychology related topics at Massey University, University of Waikato and Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand. Currently, Paul is an associate lecturer at the Singapore Institute of Management and Nanyang Technology University, Singapore.

Paul’s coaching background extends back to the mid-1990’s, working initially with behavioural change with at-risk youth. Success in this space includes working with prisoners for the purpose of reintegration into society and promotion through to executive positions.

Paul combines a multidisciplinary performance-based approach with his corporate experience, resulting in a pragmatic approach focussed on self-discovery, self-acceptance and self-responsibility. This has resulted in Paul conducting in-house and one-to-one coaching programs at senior levels in organisations such as the Royal New Zealand Navy (Deputy Commander level), developing leadership programs in the public sector, as well as in-house training as part of succession plans put in place for subsidiaries of News Ltd. in Australia.

Paul is widely published in academic and industry publications and is also regarded as a thought leader in his field by the wider HR and I/O community. In addition to industry-focused publications, Paul has featured in mainstream media like Valor Econômico (Brasil), Monitor on Psychology (USA), Talent Management Review (UK), and The Daily Telegraph (UK).

Paul is a certified EFPA (European Federation of Psychologists’ Associations) trainer, and a member of the Australian Institute of Directors, British Psychological Society, New Zealand Psychological Society and Singapore Psychological Society.
